The Jersey Cape Winery, Brewery & Distillery Trail
WINERIES: AWARD WINNING WINES ARE PRODUCED IN THE TWO SOUTHERN MOST COUNTIES IN NJ. Always recognized as the Garden State for great fruits and vegetables, parts of the state, especially the southern peninsula, have emerged in the past decade as the perfect place to grow grapes. Sandy soil and breezes from the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean provide the environment that many European grapes need to thrive. But, don’t take our word for it, make it a point to visit. Savor the wines and enjoy the ambiance of each distinct winery in Cape May and Cumberland Counties – while acting and drinking responsibly, of course. Visit each winery online or call to find out more about tours, tastings, special events and direct delivery.

BREWERIES AND DISTILLERIES: Seems like a strange combination, but alcohol and agriculture are partners in the latest tourist trend in Southern New Jersey. It’s called agritourism – which is any tourist-related draw that has to do with farming or local food sources. With plenty of farmland in the two-county area, farms are producing grains and hops needed by breweries as well as other local products used by distillers. So move over corn, blueberries and even fish and make room for wineries, breweries and distilleries. Our area has seven breweries. Add the beer makers to our eight wineries and four distilleries satisfying visitors’ thirst for wine, beer and spirits year round, and you have found even more to explore at New Jersey’s Southern Shore.

The bar rail was created using wood from former, longtime businesses in Cape May County. The centerpiece of the tasting room is the bar which features a wide-open space with two garage doors that will roll up, so you can view Main Street, giving it a Street Cafe-like feel. 205 North Main St., Cape May Court House. 609-778-2641. www.bucketbrigadebrewery.com

CAPE MAY BREWING COMPANY, Cape May Airport:
When Cape May Brewing Company (CMBC) opened in 2011, the company consisted of three guys brewing one beer in a 1,500 square-foot space at the Cape May Airport. Now, six years later, CMBC has nearly 50 employees, over 100 brews, and occupies over 20,000 square feet of space. CMBC’s original space at the Airport is now a dedicated sour brewery – the only one of its kind in New Jersey. You can see the facility on CMBC’s new, state-of-the-art interactive, self-guided tour. Designed by New Jersey artist David Macomber in a short-style reminiscent of the Wildwood Boardwalk of old, the tour walks each visitor through the brewing process, with games and silly photo opportunities along the way. There’s also a new gift shop—The Brewtique, CMBC’s full line of swag is available, as well as beer-to-go. While you’re here, sit outside and enjoy a flight of seasonal beers in CMBC’s newly expanded Beer Garden complete with a fire pit for the colder months. CMBC prides itself in innovation in brewing. With over 20 taps in the Tasting Room, there are IPAs, Belgians, Barleywines, Pale Ales, Porters, Stouts and Lagers of all tastes and varieties. Stop by on a Wedneday for One-Off Wednesday: CMBC taps a special one-keg brew available only in the Tasting Room. 1288 Hornet Road, Cape May County Airport. 609-849-9933. www.capemaybrewery.com

In keeping with the historic mission of the Village, the three barrel microbrewery features such brews with names that honor the county’s ancestors such as the Hildreth German Wheat, a pale gold brew with hints of banana, cloves and citrus. Other names are a nod to the local communities like Cold Spring Red, a lightly roasted malt and the Dennisville Potter, a dark brown beer with tastes of chocolate and coffee. 733 Seashore Road, Cold Spring, Cape May. The bridge often washed out at high tide, the train was called the MudHen. MudHen Brewing Company officially opens in 2018 featuring craft beer recipes made with the most unique yeast strains, American whole flower Hops and select malted barley. The brewing Company will also feature a Smokehouse on the brewery grounds, with seating inside and out, where customers can dine on fish, oysters and meats smoked to perfection. 127 W. Rio Grande Ave., Wildwood. www.ludlamisland.com

SLACK TIDE BREWERY, Clermont:
Before the turn of the tide there is a time of slack water when the tide water is completely unstressed. Sounds like a great name for a brewery, which is probably what the owners, two brothers raised in Cape May County, must have thought when they named their company. The brothers have created a diverse and high quality line of beers made with all natural ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible. Brews with names like Bell Buoy, a Belgian Blonde Ale, 5 Fathom Pale Ale along with Angry Osprey, an American IPA, are all made natural products and brewed in Clermont.
